Pursuing Your Passion

I remember a story that Roger Dawson (one of my favorite personal development speakers) shared in one of his training courses, The Secrets of Power Negotiating. It elucidated the power of Passion.

Imagine this: Thomas, a young seeker of knowledge, wandered through the sunlit landscapes of Greece, driven by a burning desire to uncover the wisdom of the ancients. He journeyed through countless cities, but none held the answers he sought. Yet, his quest brought him to a single, whispered name: the legendary philosopher Socrates. For months, Thomas pursued every lead, convinced that Socrates alone held the key to unlocking the mysteries of true understanding.

Finally, on a golden afternoon, Thomas’ journey brought him to a quiet beach where he saw Socrates standing alone, gazing out over the endless expanse of the ocean. Heart pounding with anticipation, Thomas rushed forward and cried, “Master, I’ve searched everywhere for you. My mind and soul hunger for your wisdom. I’ll do anything, absolutely anything, to learn what you know. Please teach me the wisdom of the ages. Give me the knowledge!”

Socrates remained silent. His eyes fixed on the horizon. Then, without a word, he began walking toward the waves. Confused but undeterred, the man followed closely, his pleas growing more urgent as they waded into the water. Socrates moved steadily until the waves lapped at his waist, their gentle rhythm mingling with the man’s desperate cries.

“Please, Master,” the man implored. “I will do anything for the knowledge.”

Suddenly, with startling swiftness, Socrates turned, seized Thomas by the neck, and plunged him beneath the water.

The world vanished into an abyss of water and panic. Thomas flailed wildly, his lungs burning, he could feel his heart pounding like thunder. Darkness pressed in, and sparks of light danced before his eyes as his strength began to fade. Just when Thomas thought he could bear no more, Socrates pulled him up, and Thomas erupted from the water, gasping, and sputtering as he gulped the air.

Socrates watched him for a moment, his face serene. Then, in a measured tone, he said, “Young man, when you want knowledge just as much as you wanted air, you’ll get it.”

This story illustrates not only the importance of passion, but also the importance of the price to pay. For true passion, a person will be willing to do anything for it. The price to pay could be your time or your energy, learning a new skill, or going out of your comfort zone, letting go of the things or the people that hold you back, releasing your fears and doubts, sacrificing your recreation time, pushing yourself to the limits, persisting… all with the knowledge that when you want something bad enough, you will get it.

Passion: it’s the unstoppable force that turns our visions into victories and our aspirations into achievements. Without it, even the most ambitious dreams remain dormant. Find your passion and embrace the unrelenting drive that makes the impossible achievable.
